Fire Engine Driver / Operator (FFT2 or FFT1)

Position Overview

Bison Ridge Fire LLC is seeking qualified Engine Driver / Operators at the Firefighter II (FFT2) or Firefighter I (FFT1) level to support Type 3 and Type 6 engine operations on state and federal incidents. This position requires strong driving skills, mechanical awareness, and the ability to safely operate apparatus under emergency and off-road conditions.

Driver/Operators are critical to engine safety, pump operations, and crew mobility and are expected to perform both driving and fireline duties.


Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Safely operate Type 3 and Type 6 wildland fire engines

  • Perform daily apparatus inspections, fluid checks, and preventative maintenance

  • Operate pumps, valves, foam systems, and hose deployments

  • Support mobile attack, structure protection, and progressive hose lays

  • Navigate narrow roads, steep terrain, and off-highway environments

  • Assist with fireline construction, mop-up, and suppression activities

  • Maintain accountability, communications, and situational awareness

  • Ensure engine cleanliness, readiness, and mechanical reliability

  • Follow all ICS, agency, and company safety standards


Required Qualifications (Minimum)

  • Class (B or A) License DOT medical card Air brakes and Tanker endorsement Clean Driving Record FFT2 or FFT1 (qualified or task book initiated/complete)

  • RT-130 (current)

  • Arduous Pack Test (current)

  • S-130 / S-190

  • ICS-100 / ICS-200

  • Valid driver’s license

  • Ability to pass background check

  • Prior wildland firefighting experience required


Preferred Qualifications

  • Engine experience (Type 3 and/or Type 6)

  • S-212 (Chainsaw)

  • Pump operations and foam system experience

  • EMT or higher medical certification

  • Experience on state and federal incidents


Physical & Work Requirements

  • Meet NWCG Arduous fitness standards

  • Operate apparatus for extended periods in dynamic environments

  • Perform physically demanding fireline tasks

  • Work 16+ hour operational shifts

  • Live and work in fire camp or spike camp settings


Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive seasonal pay based on qualification level (FFT2 or FFT1)

  • Overtime and hazard pay when applicable

  • Mobilization pay on qualifying assignments

  • Opportunity for advancement to Engine Boss (ENGB) or Captain


Employment Type

  • Seasonal / On-Call

  • Deployments based on fire activity and contract needs

  • No guaranteed minimum hours
