Engine Captain
Position Overview
Bison Ridge Fire LLC is seeking experienced Wildland Fire Engine Captains to lead Type 3 and Type 6 engine operations on state and federal incidents. Engine Captains are responsible for the safe, effective, and professional operation of assigned apparatus and crew while meeting all NWCG, agency, and company standards.
This role requires strong leadership, sound decision-making, and the ability to operate independently in complex, high-risk environments.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Provide leadership and supervision of engine personnel
Safely operate and deploy Type 3 and/or Type 6 wildland fire engines
Execute mobile attack, structure protection, and progressive hose lays
Conduct size-up, risk assessment, and tactical decision-making
Ensure compliance with Incident Action Plans (IAP) and ICS protocols
Maintain crew accountability, communications, and LCES
Oversee daily engine checks, pump operations, hose testing, and maintenance
Ensure all PPE, tools, and equipment are serviceable and mission ready
Complete required documentation and timekeeping as assigned
Represent Bison Ridge Fire LLC professionally with cooperators and agencies
Required Qualifications
Engine Boss (ENGB) – Fully Qualified
RT-130 (current)
Arduous Pack Test (current)
ICS-100 / ICS-200 / ICS-300
S-130 / S-190
S-231 (Engine Boss)
Valid driver’s license
Ability to pass background check
Prior leadership experience in wildland fire required
Preferred Qualifications
Experience as Engine Captain or Acting Captain
Type 3 engine leadership experience
CDL (Class B or higher)
S-212 (Chainsaw)
Firing operations experience (S-219)
EMT or higher medical certification
State and/or federal incident experience
Physical & Work Requirements
Meet NWCG Arduous fitness standards
Work extended shifts (16–24 hours) in austere environments
Lead crews in steep, remote, and hazardous terrain
Perform physical firefighting duties alongside crew
Operate in fire camp or spike camp environments for extended periods
